Research report by founder Westerlaken foundation about orphanages in Denpasar online.

After receiving his PhD title last April, the founder of Westerlaken foundation and its Indonesian counterpart Yayasan Bali Bersih, Dr. Rodney Westerlaken, has written a compact and easy readable extract of the extensive dissertation. The goal of the dissertation is to create awareness on the operations, expectations and legality of Child Welfare Institutions in Denpasar and to give a glimpse into the live of the inhabitants of these institutions. Life in these orphanages many times causes emotional and psychological stress for children and within this research several cases of mental and physical abuse were discovered. Further it was also analysed that the current law on child protection in Indonesia is good, even better than the UN convention of the rights of the child, but that implementation of this law needs to improve. The report is an extract of 81 pages out of more than a 400 pages dissertation and much more archive material. If you have any questions regarding this research report, feel free to contact us.

THE CHANGE IN PERCEPTION OF SUBMITTING CHILDREN TO CHILD WELFARE INSTITUTIONS IN DENPASAR CITY

Comments

The Stop Orphanages Campaign is an initiative spearheaded by Westerlaken Foundation and Yayasan Bali Bersih. Its primary objective is to combat the exploitation of children and the use of orphanages as a means of personal gain, and children as a marketing tool. While we acknowledge that there are Child Welfare Institutions (LKSA) in Indonesia that genuinely prioritize the well-being of children, extensive research reveals that a majority of orphanages in Bali, Indonesia operate in violation of the National Standard for Child Welfare Institutions (30/HUK/2011). This standard explicitly prohibits the institutionalization of children based on poverty or limited access to education, as well as emphasizes the importance of empowering families and preventing the recruitment of children into orphanages.
