HIV/AIDS AWARENESS PROGRAM - APRIL 2023 EDITION

Writer's picture: Rodney WesterlakenRodney Westerlaken

In April, Mobile Clinic conducted HIV/AIDS outreach to 13 places in Bali, specifically Denpasar City, Tabanan, Badung, and Karangasem Regencies, collaborating with Puskesmas (Public Health Centres). Three hundred children participated in socialisation, and 287 received health checks in April 2023.

This month marks exactly one year of operation of the mobile clinic. Since last year, the Mobile Clinic team has visited 126 places around Denpasar City, Badung, Tabanan, Jembrana, Buleleng, Karangasem, Klungkung, Bangli, and Gianyar Regencies to provide HIV/Aids socialisation and health checks for children.

Westerlaken Foundation/Yayasan Bali Bersih partnered with Yayasan Anak Anak Bali (Bali Kids), NEBA Foundation, and Wilde Ganzen Foundation to provide the HIV/AIDS Awareness Program. Foundations hope this program will remove the stigma from people living with HIV and those around them by providing accurate information about the disease. Foundations have always committed to running this program to provide education about HIV/AIDS and health checks for children in Bali.

Foundations have experienced a doctor and a nurse who will explain the information about HIV/AIDS and provide health checks for children. The participants from primary and junior high school students will receive illustrated books to attract attention and obtain information on HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, for high school students, socialisation is presented through a PowerPoint presentation. After the socialisation, we deliver a general medical check, including a check-up for vital signs, height, weight, eyes, and other health assessments.

The Stop Orphanages Campaign is an initiative spearheaded by Westerlaken Foundation and Yayasan Bali Bersih. Its primary objective is to combat the exploitation of children and the use of orphanages as a means of personal gain, and children as a marketing tool. While we acknowledge that there are Child Welfare Institutions (LKSA) in Indonesia that genuinely prioritize the well-being of children, extensive research reveals that a majority of orphanages in Bali, Indonesia operate in violation of the National Standard for Child Welfare Institutions (30/HUK/2011). This standard explicitly prohibits the institutionalization of children based on poverty or limited access to education, as well as emphasizes the importance of empowering families and preventing the recruitment of children into orphanages.
