Yayasan Bali Bersih socialises how to handle stranded and laying turtles in collaboration with the Service Office of Environment and Sanitation (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup dan Kebersihan, DLHK) of Badung Regency, Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (Balai Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Pesisir dan Laut, BPSPL) of Denpasar, Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC), and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN).
BADUNG, Thursday, December 22, 2022, Yayasan Bali Bersih disseminated information on handling stranded and egg-laying turtles in collaboration with the Service Office of Environment and Sanitation (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup dan Kebersihan, DLHK) of Badung Regency. This socialisation presented three speakers. The first speaker, from the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (Balai Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Pesisir dan Laut, BPSPL) of Denpasar, Agung Dananjaya, presented "Turtle Regulation in Indonesia". I Made Sukanta, the second speaker from the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) of Serangan, presented "Quick Response to Handling Stranded and Egg-Laying Turtles". The third speaker, from Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Femke den Haas, presented "Turtle Rescue".
The participants came from field staff who were in charge of cleaning the coastal areas of Badung Regency. In addition, guests from the staff of the Marine and Fisheries Ministry (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, KKP) of Badung Regency and BPSPL were also present, with a total of 55 participants. Yayasan Bali Bersih appreciated the participants' enthusiasm to listen to the socialisation, which went very well.
Through this outreach, representatives from BPSPL said that the turtle populations most often found in coastal areas in Bali are olive ridley turtles and green turtles. Turtles are protected marine biota, and it is strictly forbidden to use them for meat, eggs, or limbs. TCEC representatives said turtle conservation focuses on efforts to save stranded turtles and move turtle eggs to a safer place. Femke den Haas noted that the current turtle population and one of the reasons for the decline of the turtle population is plastic waste.
The Head of DLHK of Badung Regency appreciates the program organised by Yayasan Bali Bersih because it provides benefits to field staff working in coastal areas. So, later the field staff will know how to handle if there are turtles that are stranded or are laying eggs.
Yayasan Bali Bersih hopes this event can provide insight into saving marine mammals and stranded turtles. Also, the turtle handling forum can be used for information if there are stranded turtles or laying eggs in the Badung area. Yayasan Bali Bersih with DLHK of Badung Regency can implement the results of socialisation when turtles are stranded or lay their eggs on the coast.
