about us
The Stop Orphanages Campaign is a dedicated initiative aimed at ensuring children are not separated from their families and protected from experiences that may cause emotional or physical harm. The campaign promotes ethical alternatives, focusing on family empowerment and community-based care, rather than institutionalization.
Established in 2015, Yayasan Westerlaken Alliance Indonesia is a non-profit organization operating as the local partner of the Dutch Westerlaken Foundation. Governed by a fully Indonesian board, our organization shares the mission of promoting human and children’s rights in Indonesia. A key aspect of our work involves comprehensive research on the rights of children residing in Child Welfare Institutions (orphanages) across Indonesia.
Through our human rights and children’s rights programs, we actively monitor cases of potential abuse and exploitation in Child Welfare Institutions. We strongly advocate for the enforcement of the Indonesian Decree of the Minister of Social Affairs No. 30/HUK/2011, which establishes National Standards of Care for Child Welfare Institutions. This decree emphasizes that children should not be institutionalized solely due to poverty or limited access to education, particularly when parents or close family members are capable of providing proper care.
We firmly believe in empowering families and discourage orphanages from recruiting children unnecessarily. By supporting family-based care and sustainable community solutions, our campaign aims to ensure every child can grow up in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment free from the trauma of separation.
