Earthquake (4.8 magnitude) hits East Bali

Writer: Rodney WesterlakenRodney Westerlaken

On October 16, 2021 a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit the area of Ban village, East Bali. This area is a remote area that has had a number of disasters hitting the area in the past years, such as the Gunung Agung eruptions, the Lombok earthquake and Covid-19.

On Tuesday 19 Oktober representatives of Westerlaken foundation / Yayasan Bali Bersih, Crisis Kitchen and Bali NGO & Associates visited the area for evaluation and assessment of what aid is needed.

Due to the repeating disasters in this area we could see that aid is well organised through the Kepala Desa office and that the need is quite large. Desa Ban consists of 16.800 souls, more or less 3.500 families. When looking at severely damaged houses we sadly have to conclude that more or less 10% of the houses are so damaged that it is not safe anymore to live in them. They will need to be rebuild. Due to landslides the water supply to the village is broken and currently the Indonesian Red Cross currently provides water within tank wagons. Within this crisis we choose to focus on water (Sustainable Development Goal 6) and will provide 37 waterfilters to designated people in Jatituhu. We have bought these waterfilters from our partner Social Impakt with our current fundraiser for this cause.

Our fundraiser is still running and we welcome any donation!

The Stop Orphanages Campaign is an initiative spearheaded by Westerlaken Foundation and Yayasan Bali Bersih. Its primary objective is to combat the exploitation of children and the use of orphanages as a means of personal gain, and children as a marketing tool. While we acknowledge that there are Child Welfare Institutions (LKSA) in Indonesia that genuinely prioritize the well-being of children, extensive research reveals that a majority of orphanages in Bali, Indonesia operate in violation of the National Standard for Child Welfare Institutions (30/HUK/2011). This standard explicitly prohibits the institutionalization of children based on poverty or limited access to education, as well as emphasizes the importance of empowering families and preventing the recruitment of children into orphanages.
